Oscar Wilde in Leadville, CO - "Please do not shoot the pianist ..."

We are enjoying a lovely ski vacation in Leadville, CO - skiing at Ski Cooper - and in a moment of idleness I hit WikiMe on the iPhone, which shows locally relevant Wiki articles.

The Leadville entry is very interesting - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leadville - highlights include a visit here by Oscar Wilde on his lecture tour of the West, when he spoke at the cities Opera House. Apparently he also saw that sign "Please do not shoot the pianist. He is doing his best" in a local saloon, which he later described as an ideal approach to art criticism. (Scroll down the entry to the 'Discovery of Silver').

Other interesting stories are those of Henry Tabor, the man who made and lost a fortune in mining, building the opera house on the way. This was a real wild west town, with Doc Holliday and all.

Today Leadville is a small town (pop less than 3,000, down from 40,000 in its silver rush heyday), with loads of slightly run down charm in its historic district, and much more interesting than some of the sterile, ritzy resorts around here. I would recommend it for a visit or stay - we are staying at the Leadville Inn - http://www.leadvilleinn.com - which is very comfortable and in a great location.
